Life choices, Life projects
The accompaniment of the baby-boom/grandpa-boom generation in its desire for long life: What economic model?
Gilles DUTHIL, Reporter for the work group
The report will appear in November 2006
France, as a part of the western world, is experiencing an unprecedented phenomenon: the absence of wars and epidemics over a long period, and a significant prolonging of the lifespan. This phenomenon is all the more structuring in that it concerns, for the next thirty years, a numerous new generation of French: the children of the baby-boomers who have become the retired grandpa-boomers.
The aim of our work group is to demonstrate that, far from constituting a burden for French society, this numerous generation’s desire for long life can be a source for the creation of wealth, notably through personal services. These services should be organized not only after the end of professional activities, but all during their second life, particularly in order to anticipate eventual health problems.
The central question of the thesis is what model to put in place, in an operational manner, in order t insure that each person can organize his life during his ols age according to his wishes.
Based on the local experience of three French towns (Paris, Dieppe, Sartilly) with different socio-cultural environments, we will study:
- The demand for care and services, and its determinants.
- The response from the supply side.
- The sources of financing.
- The arbitration necessary both on the micro- and the macro-economic levels in order to assure the durability of the project
3 - Synthesizing Memoranda
Composed by an expert, their purpose is to present the state of advancement of a project, and to measure its socio-economic impact for the various persons who are impacted by it.
